Background : The aims of this study were to examine the reliability and the validity of the Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Methods : The PHQ-9, Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered to 58 normal subjects and 109 patients (depression 61, anxiety 48). Results : The values of Cronbach's alpha and test-retest correlation coefficient were .936 and .553 (P<.001), respectively. The depressed group yielded higher scores on the PHQ-9 than normal and anxiety groups. The PHQ-9 correlated strongly with PHQ-2 (r=.759) and CES-D (r=.716). The discriminant analysis showed that the hit ratio of PHQ-9 was 90.8%. Sensitivity and specificity were 85% and 52%, respectively. Conclusions : The PHQ-9 showed to be a reliable and valid screening tool for depression. (
